SEND Teaching Assistants

SEND teaching assistants support the educational, social, and emotional development of students with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) within a school setting.

They work under the guidance of the SENCO and class teachers to provide tailored support and ensure an inclusive learning environment.

SEND teaching assistants provide individual support:

• They will assist students with SEND on a one-to-one basis or in small groups, adapting learning materials and resources to meet their needs.
• Implement individual Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and strategies as directed by the SENCO and class teachers.
• Provide personal care when necessary, ensuring the dignity and comfort of students.

SEND teaching assistants play a pivotal role in the classroom by:

Supporting teachers by managing pupil behaviour and promoting a positive learning environment. They will help prepare and maintain classroom resources and assist with the organisation of activities. Much of the role is about fostering independence and encouraging students to develop social skills.

Communication and collaboration are essential:

• SEND teaching assistants need to communicate effectively with teachers, parents, and other professionals involved in the pupil’s education.
• They will attend and contribute to staff meetings, training sessions, and review meetings related to SEND.
• It’s important that they keep accurate records of pupil’s progress and any incidents, reporting to the SENCO and class teachers as required.
